It is as important to build relationships in life as
it is in education. Going the extra mile for those we know and like is part of
human nature. Learning a name, pronouncing it right, and matching the same to
the right kid is a very critical matter for every nursery school teacher and is usually the first courtesy that is
extended to students. Quicker you learn names at your teaching job in nursery school, more every kid will know that you
care.
Start by greeting every
student at the door, ask their name, and mark it in your attendance sheet. Look back and forth between the written
name and their face so that the relationship is cemented in your brain. That
will help you get at least five names out of the way immediately.
Get the students to
make name tags and place them facing you so the names can be read easily. You can put down specific instructions
on how it is to be done which would also indicate your demand for the highest
standards. If you are dissatisfied with their performance, don’t hesitate to
ask them to repeat.
Use as many names as
possible. You may sound
weird but try repeating a name around three or four times. They may not have
taught you this in nursery teacher training but it works!
Give yourself a memory
test. Ask the students
to keep their name tags facing up as you read them out loud, relating to the
face of the child as you go along. Then ask them to turn the tags down and see
how many names you can get right. You can also ask the students to have a go at
the game to add to the fun element.
In the end, you are sure to forget some or most of
the names! Ask the students to keep bringing the tags to class for at least the
first week, by the end of which you are sure to get most of the names paired
with the students correctly.
